This local response in the context of national debate is best explained by Yarwood (2001) who highlights how restructuring in the countryside has led to heightened levels of anxiety, often expressed as fear of crime and that ‘urban problems’ are presented as eroding rural ways of life. The historic strength of temperance organizations in Eden is also important in understanding the nature of anti-young people/anti-alcohol discourses. In preindustrial rural societies, ‘the pub’ was one of the few social spaces open to rural residents; however, the growth of Christianity alongside political and economic change ensured that these venues became the exclusive domain of men (Dean 2002).
In this section we have highlighted the way in which the relationship between alcohol consumption and rurality has been conceptualized. We have described the rich variety of work focused on a fascinating range of topics in diverse rural locations around the world. Such progress notwithstanding, there has nonetheless been a tendency for this work to be limited due to the problems with case study based research outlined in the Introduction. In the remainder of this chapter we look in detail at one issue – young people and alcohol consumption – in order to show how unpacking the similarities, differences, connectivities and mobilities between and within rural spaces and places (and in comparison to urban drinking practices) offers the opportunity for more sophisticated theoretical perspectives on drinking in the countryside to be developed.
Drinking, described by Latham as a mixing of social groups on the street, is then a collectivity that is risky risk, but in urban space drunkenness and the collectivity that is part of this, (despite the incidents of violence) is clearly attractive. Understanding and balancing these tensions is of course a challenge to policy makers. This ambiguity surrounding public space is well established by Thomas (2002) who in discussing an interesting case study from South East Asia identifies changes in the nature of public space in Hanoi, Vietnam.
